KIDSAFE CT and The Village for Families & Children join efforts
to help vulnerable children and families succeed
HARTFORD/VERNON, CT – Today, after months of planning, KIDSAFE CT became an affiliate of The Village for Families & Children. For the past four years, the two nonprofit organizations have worked together on programs for families in the Greater Hartford and Tolland counties. They also co-located services at KIDSAFE’s historic headquarters on Elm Street in Vernon.
“We already had a deep commitment to one another through three shared ventures,” said Judy Clarke, executive director of KIDSAFE CT. “We had mission statements that mirrored one another, we had a strong respect for one another, and both organizations have demonstrated longstanding dedication, commitment and passion for helping families and children succeed. This affiliation was the logical next step, especially in face of funding pressure.”
For more than 200 years, The Village has been committed to building a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children. The nonprofit organization accomplishes its mission by providing a full range of children's behavioral health treatment, foster care and adoption, and community support services for children and their families.
For more than 35 years, KIDSAFE CT has been dedicated to the early intervention, prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. It offers parenting education, community support services for children and their families, supervised visitation, teen mentoring and positive development programs through an after-school drop-in center for middle and high school youth, and support for the Vernon Middle School.
“During our discussions over many months, leadership from both organizations become increasingly excited about the many benefits that could come from an affiliation,” said Galo Rodriguez, president and CEO of The Village. “We believe that working even more closely together, sharing resources, expertise and relationships will greatly benefit our staff, the communities we serve, and most importantly, our clients – in both Greater Hartford and Tolland.”
Two members of KIDSAFE’s Board of Directors – President, Attorney Douglas K. Manion, of Kahan, Kerensky & Capossela, LLP in Vernon, and Director, Lourdes Ardel, of Eastern Connecticut State University – will join The Village’s board of directors to maintain leadership continuity.
“KIDSAFE CT has provided critical services to children and families east of the river for many years, and we look forward to continuing and expanding our mission for many, many more years as a result of our affiliation with The Village,” said Manion.
KIDSAFE CT is part of a network of centers established by the National Exchange Club Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse and receives support from Connecticut area Exchange Clubs. KIDSAFE CT will continue to provide services for the Greater Hartford and Tolland counties as it does today from its current location on Elm Street in Vernon.
Last year, The Village served over 15,000 clients (including 6,700 recipients of tax assistance). The Village has three historic program sites in Hartford, serves students in 13 Hartford public schools and has offices in Bloomfield, Manchester, Meriden and Middletown.
